Trading Cards

These electronic trading cards where a promotion run by Capital records when the album Echoes was released back in late-2001. The was also a contest to find the cards and download them. The first 500 people who registered, found and downloaded the six cards received a real set a trading cards. I have my set. :)

The descriptions below are all quotes from the designer of the cards, Storm Thorgerson. Just click on the card's corresponding letter of Echoes to download the zip file containing the card.

E - The deceptive veil betokening the ever presence of the absent Syd, seen in vulnerable bareness. The repeating ripples of meddling sound waves set against the mad stillness of Momentary Lapse where approx 800 Vistorian wrought iron beds waited neverously for the wet dream of a fast returning tide. Must be computered for no one in their right mind would do this for real. But then again . . .

C - Botanic glass houses and long coloured scarves hobnob with marching clogs of them dutch workers, whilst Rick's long hair contrasts with early Syd sensuality and one of the world's recording phenomena never misses a (heart) beat. Everyone has a dark side.

H - Surrounded in pinkness the floyd fool around in the Sahara looking for the genie in the bottle, whilst David plays one of the "those" solos atop ramparts with the Mask of the Mason close behind, and talking whales are marooned on the sand unheard by the Great Ear of Meddle whose title remains a mystery to all.

O - Saucerful of Secrets was a collection of favoured images, including a nattily dressed stranger, swirling and overlapping in narcotic fashion, so redolent of the times and containing an infared, weirdly colored fish eye photo of the band by a lake of course.

E - Herewith a cornucopia of poppies, gongs, puppets and blurred memories of Floyd live at UFO or Middle Earth, and a diver without his splash in Lake Mono, so tranquil and beautiful yet so haunting, like a man without his marbles, to plunge so soon into the blue depths, be gone from view like a comet, bright, brilliant and all too brief.

S - Echoes of an old album cover, distorted shapes receding into the distance, portals to other worlds, infinitely regressive. A picture of a window through which other windows are seen, rooms within rooms, figues from the past occupying the present as real as the building and the landscape beyond. The spaces between littered with objects from a ghostly past, to be identified, like a puzzle, or a set of clues which point to an answer. Or not.
